    Position description

    Position title:                Assistant Athletic Trainer University of St. Thomas

    Direct Supervisor:       Head Athletic Trainer and Sports Medicine Manager

    Exemption status:       Exempt

    Position purpose summary:

    Member of the University of St. Thomas Athletic Training Staff located in St. Paul, MN.  Provide athletic training services to Division One varsity student-athletes at University of St. Thomas including organization and administration of all aspects of the sports medicine program, injury management, prevention, rehabilitation, documentation, travel, and care. Function as a member of the Twin Cities Orthopedic outreach program. 

    Essential functions:

    ·         Serve as an assistant Athletic Trainer at University of St. Thomas

    ·         Responsible for the assessment, treatment, prevention, documentation, and rehabilitation of acute, chronic, and emergency injuries and illnesses

    ·         Provide primary athletic training medical coverage for varsity sports including practice, events, and travel.  Upper extremity experience preferred.

    ·         Determine athletes readiness to participate in conjunction with the team physician(s) (i.e. pre-participation evaluation and post-injury/illness return)

    ·         Refer student-athletes to team physicians and/or specialists as needed

    ·         Provide medical treatment and rehabilitation per direction of physician, medical specialists, and/or Head Athletic Trainer

    ·         Identify psychosocial intervention needs and refer as necessary

    ·         Function closely with Strength and Conditioning Coaches

    ·         Maintains records and prepare administrative reports as required by the Head Athletic Trainer, OSHA, and all St. Thomas conference affiliations

    Additional functions:

    ·         Provide education and work direction to athletic training interns as assigned

    ·         Function cooperatively with all other staff, coaches, and department personnel

    ·         Comply with all rules and regulations of University of St. Thomas, athletic conference affiliations, and NCAA

    ·         Educate student-athletes on the nutritional aspects of injuries/illnesses

    ·         Any and all other duties as assigned

    Education, experience, & other requirements:

    ·         Bachelor’s Degree Required/ Master’s Degree Preferred

    ·         NATABOC certification

    ·         Licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the state of Minnesota

    ·         Current CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens certification required

    ·         1-2 years of Division One college athletic trainer experience

    ·         Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays

    Additional essential requirements:

    Ability to: 

    ·         Travel independently throughout the workplace (which may include movement from floor to floor); stand for long periods of time

    ·         Work non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays

    ·         Frequently work at a fast pace, with unscheduled interruptions and deadlines

    ·         Converse in a calm, friendly manner

    ·         Apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

    ·         Proficiently operate modern clinic and office (e.g., PC) equipment; and communicate on and operate the phone system. 

    ·         Travel to other work-related locations

    Environmental conditions:

    ·         Traditional collegiate athletic training setting

    ·         Non-traditional hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays

    ·         May be exposed to hazardous agents and infectious disease; cast dust and saw noise

    ·         Clinic charts, patient demographics, and financial information on all test and hospital notes
