    Description: Indiana State University is seeking a Doctoral Graduate Assistant in the Department of Applied Medicine and Rehabilitation focused on earning their PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in athletic training education or their PhD in Educational Leadership. The Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction is a practitioner/scholar-based degree designed to prepare you to become a scholar who can discover, integrate and apply knowledge, as well as communicate it. The Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership is a practitioner/scholar-based degree designed to prepare you for educational leadership in a complex and changing educational environment. If you dream of making a difference in higher education as an administrator, teacher, or scholar in athletic training education, this is the program for you. The program is a combination of 72 credit hours of coursework and an 18 credit-hour dissertation. The time of completion can range from three to four years.

    Candidates must be apply and enroll in the Indiana State University College of Graduate and Professional Studies and either the Curriculum and Instruction Program or Educational Leadership Program to be eligible.

    Qualifications: Applicants are eligible for residential doctoral graduate assistantships working with the Indiana State University Doctorate in Athletic Training (DAT) Program and Masters in Athletic Training (MAT) Program. Assistantships provide financial aid including tuition waivers (9 credits for Fall and Spring semesters) and a $13,800 stipend. Summer financial support is possible, but not guaranteed.

    All assistantship positions are for 1 year, are renewable, and are most often a 3-4-year placement. Renewal of the graduate assistantship is dependent upon academic eligibility, certification status, and professional conduct.

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    • Staff Editor for Clinical Practice in Athletic Training Journal
    • Providing administrative support for the DAT and MAT degree programs which may include, but is not limited to:

    o Accreditation support

    o Focused, intensive learning weekend planning

    o Curricular planning and assessment

    o Recruitment and retention

    • Facilitating guided research with DAT and MAT core faculty which may include:

    o Independent and collaborative research

    o Dissemination of research findings through manuscripts and presentations

    o Preparation of grant proposals and IRB applications

    o Manuscript reviews

    • Other duties as needed, assigned by DAT and MAT core faculty

    Physical Demands and Work Environment

    • Office-based, flexible work environment, often at remote worksites.


    Minimum of a Master’s degree or other terminal degree from an accredited institution required. Must be certified as an Athletic Trainer, credentialed by the Board of Certification. Must be accepted to Indiana State University graduate school. Post-certification clinical experience is strongly encouraged.

    • Official transcripts for all institutions attended (undergraduate and graduate) must be sent directly from the school attended to Graduate Admissions. E-transcripts should be sent to admissions@indstate.edu. Indiana State University graduates are not required to submit transcripts.

    PhD Program Requirements

    • Spring admission deadline is November 1 of the previous calendar year
    • Summer admission deadline is March 1 of the current year
    • Minimum grade point average (GPA) 3.0
